The Story

Recent research and our clinical experience have explored the relationship between autism and OCD. The symptoms of both conditions can overlap, but there can be differences in terms of wanting to engage or resist the ‘obsessive’ behaviour, the focus and function of the obsession, and modifications of therapy to accommodate the characteristics of autism.

Autism and OCD are not mutually exclusive and can influence one another, resulting in unique symptom profiles.

Research confirms the importance of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), particularly exposure and response prevention (ERP), for the treatment of OCD. However, to enhance its efficacy, CBT needs to be modified to accommodate autism and to include greater family involvement. We discuss additional treatments that can be helpful, including medication, mindfulness and meditation and EMDR therapy.
