The Story
We know from research that approximately 30% of individuals with a substance-related addictive disorder are autistic. Many autistic individuals struggle with behavioural addictions, such as Internet gaming. Autism is a risk factor for developing an addiction and is a factor that needs assessment and consideration in the recovery from addiction. This presentation will cover the latest research on the assessment and treatment of addiction in the context of autism, particular challenges for the autistic person, parents and professionals, and how to meet these challenges. Modifications to both inpatient and outpatient programmes for the treatment of addiction will be discussed.
