The Story
The association between autism and anxiety has long been recognised. We know that most autistic individuals experience daily problems with anxiety and that anxiety increases the expression of autism.
In our first section, we cover an update of the latest research. Next, we discuss reasons for high levels of anxiety in autism, including different neurology, hormones, and the polyvagal system. We describe how to support and accommodate an autistic person who is experiencing high levels of anxiety across school, home, community, and work settings.
During the last section of the day, we will discuss neuroaffirming therapy for autistic individuals with anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, selective (situational) mutism, specific phobia, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Our course covers autism and anxiety across the lifespan.
